Dr. Angel Gonzalez '99

Academic Dean, Director of Admissions & Teacher at De La Salle Academy

Greetings! I am Angel Gonzalez. I was born in Medellin, Colombia, but raised in the Bronx. I have worked with middle and high school age students in an array of educational programs and community organizations as a teacher, mentor, and researcher. I am proud to say that I’m a member of the legendary DLSA class of 1999!

After graduating, I went on to boarding school at St. Andrew’s in Delaware. For those of you

who are unfamiliar, it is the same campus where they filmed The Dead Poet’s Society. After four years in Delaware, I returned to NYC and received a B.A. in Sociology from Hunter College at the City University of New York. At Hunter, I fell in love with educational research and was awarded a Mellon May Undergraduate Fellowship. This fellowship allowed me the time and resources to explore a career in academia.

Upon graduating from Hunter, I went out to the Bay Area where I began an M.A./Ph.D.  program in Education at University of California, Berkeley. At Berkeley, I developed interests in the areas of Black and Latino Masculinities, Sociology of Education, and Critical Theories of Race, Class, Gender and Sexuality. After four and half years, I moved back to New York to do data-collection and to work as an adjunct lecturer at Hunter College where I taught courses on gender, race and education.

While completing my dissertation, I ended up working part-time at DLSA as an American Studies teacher! One thing lead to another and five years later I am now a full-time faculty member in the department of social studies. It has indeed come full circle for me to be teaching the next generation of Lasallians. While some things have changed—like our new six-story building—the caring community and rigorous curriculum have withstood the test of time. I am honored to be able to give back as an older brother and to help in any way that I can to support the school’s mission.

I strongly believe that my journey is indebted to my experiences here at DLSA. It was on the 4th floor of 97th and Amsterdam where I experienced the magic of being in a school that cared for my mind, body, and spirit. Holding these experiences close to my heart, I have tried every step of my career to show others through my faithfulness, heart, and dedication that another kind of education is possible.
