Fay Vincent gives $1-million-dollar endowment to De La Salle Academy

Francis (Fay) Thomas Vincent Jr., is a former Washington lawyer, senior executive at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), President and CEO of Columbia Pictures, Executive Vice President of Coca-Cola and trustee at numerous educational institutions including Williams College, Yale Law School, Hotchkiss School, and Fairfield University.  He also served as the eighth Commissioner of Major League Baseball from September 1989 to September 1992.  A longtime supporter of De La Salle Academy, Fay gifted $1 million for an endowment in memory of his dear friend and fellow classmate from Williams College, Norm Gordon.

Norm passed away on June 10, 2019, after a battle with cancer.  He was a history teacher at De La Salle from 2002 to 2015. During his time at the school, Norm developed a unique style of teaching history through storytelling.  He gave context to the names, dates, and places, and this captivated the students.  Norm and Fay, who were teammates on the football team at Williams, also shared in common their love for De La Salle Academy.

De La Salle, founded in 1984, is a middle school (grades six through eight) for academically talented students who come from economically less advantaged backgrounds.  48% of De La Salle students come from families with annual incomes of $50,000 or less.  31% come from families with annual incomes of $30,000 or less.  The school is located in midtown Manhattan and is comprised of a diverse community with over 160 students commuting from all over the metropolitan area.

Some statistics about De La Salle Academy:

  • 96% of the students are African-American, Latino-American, or Asian-American.

  • 90% of the students are first-generation American.

  • 98% of alumni attend college and 93% graduate college in four years.

  • 90% of the operating budget comes from sources other than tuition.

Mr. Vincent’s leadership gift of $1 million is a generous addition to De La Salle’s endowment and will enrich the De La Salle program for years to come.
